The crowdfunding website Global Giving is trying to raise $2 million to provide “food, water, and medicine in addition to longer-term recovery assistance” to Harvey’s victims. By Monday afternoon, it had raised more than $270,000.

The crowdfunding service GoFundMe also has highlighted stories of people who are suffering as a result of Harvey.

HOW TO HELP, From the Washington Post

The American Red Cross is encouraging people to donate money on  its website  or to text 90999 to donate $10. The organization is also asking for volunteers. (Note from DougTerry,us: the Red Cross in the past has been criticized for using major disasters to add to its general fund rather than for the specific event. Check with them if this concerns you before making donations.)

AS OF MONDAY AFTERNOON (3:00 PM, CDT): THERE ARE REPORTS THAT MORE BOATS ARE NEEDED FOR RESCUES. This cannot be confirmed. It appears that flat bottomed boats powered by giant fans of the type used in swamps and marsh land might be particularly helpful in getting through places with shallow water faster. If you live within reasonable driving distance and want to lend a hand you are encouraged to go for it. However, there appears to be no one coordinating these efforts at the present time, so there is no guarantee you would be successful in helping out.

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center and Texas-based Carter BloodCare (1-877-385-724) are accepting donations.

Several organizations are offering aid to displaced pets, including Dallas Animal Services and the SPCA of Texas.

And  the Texas Diaper Bank is assisting people with small children.

Editor’s note: This is a minimal list. We will be posting more detailed suggestions soon.
